Waste Card Mosaic Photo Frame
By Sanchita Kapoor

Mosaic photo frames make use of absolute waste material for designing. Broken ceramics, arbitrary shaped mirror chips, non-stringed beads etc. are perfect for making mosaic photo frame. Just make your creativity run wild and let a plain frame take its shape as a lovely mosaic photo frame. Presenting here is a step by step procedure to create a mosaic picture frame using expired gift cards, credit cards, club cards, health insurance cards etc. Check it out:

Material Needed

A Wooden Frame

Glue Gun

Expired plastic cards like subway cards, health insurance cards, gift cards, credit cards etc.

Step 1

First of all, lay a newspaper on and around your work area. Now, take the old wooden frame and brush off the dust and dirt to make it a neat, usable frame.

Step 2

Next, cut the old credit cards, gift cards, subway cards etc. into tiny pieces with the help of a knife or sharp scissors.

Step 3

Arrange the card pieces in the desired fashion. The pieces can be arranged in a particular design pattern or arbitrarily, as per your desire.

Step 4

Once the design pattern is set, start picking one piece at a time and stick it as it is on the frame using a glue gun.

Step 5

Make sure that the frame has dried out completely before use, or else the card pieces would end up chipping and falling from the frame. All done, well, you are ready with a waste card mosaic photo frame!

The Wonderful Commercial Gift – Digital Photo Frame
By Tracy Liao

The digital photo frame is not a newcomer to us anymore. The concept was proposed a few years ago. And then it draws attention from the manufacturers and users and gets a start on the market. However, it goes the different way from the common consumer electronics. It experiences the rapid development on the commercial gift market.

Ever before, the traditional commercial gifts are relatively simple, just like the tea-sets or car products which are up-market but not very practical. The senders will look for the decent gift. And the receiver wants the gift to be practical and memorable. It’s hard to achieve the unity. However, a simple 7 inch digital frame can meet the needs of senders and receivers at the same time.

Why does the digital photo frame become popular on the commercial gift market? The digital photo frame is designed to be different from the common digital products which are defined to be portable and small. But the digital photo frame is positioned to be placed in a fixed way. And it’s less concerned at first. But the large size makes it to be the nice gift. It looks decent after it’s perfectly packaged.

From the perspective of function, the digital photo frame also meets the requirements of commercial present. Generally, a frame will support photo-browsing, video file playback, e-book reading, electronic calendar, clock, expanding card and USB. If you place it in office, it can present the commercial products in a dynamic way. The mp3 background music will activate the traditional representing mode. You can enjoy the music and recall the memory pleasantly after work. It can help to lower stress at work effectively.

Of course, the commercial gift market is just the take-off board for the digital frame to enter the market. As a new digital item, it will continue its development. It’s gradually developed to be room decoration. Now the manufacturers get the digital frame with more personalized elements. The products are developed both on appearance and function. The digital photo frame gets its start on the commercial gift market. Later it flies off the shelves and are common in homes.

Digital Photography For Beginners – Step by Step Guide to Stunning Digital SLR Sunset Photography!

Digital Photography For Beginners – Step by Step Guide to Stunning Digital SLR Sunset Photography!
By Paul Summers

Having a Digital SLR camera to use is the ultimate thrill for a budding photographer. Taking great sunset shots should be easy with such a tool, surely? You would think so, yet I know people who have invested in decent SLR’s – but still could not create stunning sunset shots that even their previous compact camera could take. This digital photography for beginners article therefore suggests steps you can take to optimise your digital SLR for sunset photographs.

Many compact cameras have a setting for sunsets, yet DSLR’s don’t, so you have to take control of the situation. Turn off your fully auto, or basic shooting modes, and use your creative zone modes of P (program mode), Tv (shutter priority), Av (aperture priority) or M (manual) so that you have full control over the camera’s parameters.

Auto White Balance can neutralise a sunset’s glow, so switch to Manual White Balance and choose a setting of Cloudy or Shade.

Most DSLR’s give you a number of “user defined” Picture Styles, so set one of these up for taking sunsets. Leave sharpness as standard, and add a little saturation.

You need to reduce the contrast to avoid your final image appearing over silhouetted. Adjust the Contrast slider in your user defined Picture Style one or two notches to the left. A reddish colour cast can also be achieved by doing the same with your Colour Tone settings.

Set your ISO at the lowest setting of ISO100. There’s usually plenty of brightness in the sky, so this is fine. Sunsets can suffer from grainy images with higher ISO settings.

Exposure is important in any sunset shot. It’s best to switch to Partial metering mode and take a manual meter reading. This can be a difficult aspect of digital photography for beginners to understand, so I’ll explain how to do this. Once in Partial metering mode, point the camera at a bright area of the sky, directly above the setting sun. Press the Star button on the back of the camera to take a light reading and to set the exposure. Then compose your shot and press the shutter release to drive the autofocus and capture the image.

Consider your composition. Silhouetted objects and figures in the foreground will add interest. Reflective surfaces, such as lake water, the sea or wet roads will bring added colour to the shot.

Beware – once the sun starts to near the horizon, it sinks surprisingly quickly. This also happens to be the optimum moment when you will catch the strongest shots, yet it can come and go in an instant. Be prepared – make sure all your settings are in place well before this time.

When the sun has disappeared, it doesn’t mean you should. For another thirty minutes or so, there can often be some amazing colour across the sky, so keep looking for more opportunities for great photos.

I hope this step by step digital photography for beginners sunset guide has been helpful, and that you can catch some beautiful sunset photographs in the future. They truly are wonderful shots to look back on.

Film Versus Digital Photography

Film Versus Digital Photography
By Alexander Rorty

We are now at the point where film has become almost completely obsolete. However, film had some advantages over digital photography that are perhaps not completely understood. In this article, I will discuss the differences between film and digital photography.

Resolution

With digital photography, we are used to thinking of digital images in terms of the number of pixels that they are in dimensions. For instance, a particular image might be 900×440 pixels. This is because digital photography works by having specific color values for each of the pixels in a large shape. Note, however, that, at the end of the day, a digital picture is made of a collection of atomic pixels, each of which is square and made of exactly one color.

On the other hand, film does not have pixellation. Rather, the image includes shapes that approximate the way in which the light hit the negative. In other words, film is capable of including curves. At the end of the day, a pixellated image will be a series of steps approximating a curve, while a photographic image allows for true curves. This is not to say that a filmed image has higher resolution than a digital image; it is simply that the concept of pixellation doesn’t apply.

Image Production

One of the interesting things about film is that the final picture is actually the result of two separate photochemical processes. First, the light affects the negative, imprinting an image. Then, the light is shone on the film paper, causing the final image. This has the odd effect that there are actually two places where film production can go wrong. On the one hand, there can be a problem with the original production on the negative. On the other hand, however, the paper itself may age or decay.

This has important results for film restoration. Often, restorers do not have access to the negative of the film or picture. Therefore, the image that they produce is literally the copy of a copy of a copy. However, when restorers have access to the original negatives, they will be able to produce much higher quality restorations, as the negatives have the image of which the picture is only a picture.

Digital photography, too, can go wrong in two places. First, it can go wrong in the actual creation of the digital file. The image will only every have as high resolution as that original file, though it can ultimately be reduced. Second, it can go wrong in the printing of the file. Many people take high quality digital photographs and then print them off using a lower quality printer. As a result, the overall image quality is compromised.

Film and digital photography have some rather important similarities and differences.

Digital Photography Tips – Effective Routine to Take Stunning Pictures With Compact Digital Camera
By Wan Tze Lee

Like any profession, being a good photographer requires a routine to complete his job effectively. Having a proper routine enables a photographer to take stunning pictures in different conditions. It is completely impossible to accomplish great tasks if you don’t have an effective routine – regardless you’re a professional or an amateur photographer. Apart from that, by having a productive routine, you’ll be able to improve the accuracy of your photo-taking skill and your preparedness in photography.

Here’s the effective routine of a photographer who uses a compact digital camera:

1. Bring along your bag in every photo-taking session

Being a photographer, you must a set of tools to help you take spectacular pictures. You must bring along some spare memory cards – compact flash cards, SD cards or memory sticks, spare batteries – most compact cameras have self-installed batteries, hence you’ve to bring along the camera’s battery charger, tripod – since you cannot rely much your camera’s Image Stabilizer feature to avoid taking blurry pictures, some snacks – just in case there are no food available during your long photo-shoot session; and artificial lighting (if you’re carrying along large-size bag) – i.e. spot lights that are meant for indoor photo shoot.

2. Always shoot in automatic mode

Since the photo-taking process can be so unforgiving, sometimes you’ve to act fast to capture those unforgettable moments or any dazzling images by using the automatic mode. If you have ample of time to take a certain picture, you can manually adjust the camera settings – i.e. colors, contrast, brightness, white balance and many more; so that you can produce good quality image.

3. Always have a habit of re-check your work

In every shot you take, the snapshot is viewable in the LCD mini-screen as soon as you’ve pressed the shutter. If it’s still possible to take another shot, you can capture the image once again and re-check it via the LCD mini-screen. Eliminate those pictures which the subjects are completely overshadowed by any distracting elements of the pictures.

4. Using the right ISO setting

You can manually adjust the ISO settings when you’re taking pictures under different conditions. For instance, if you want to take pictures under dim conditions – you have to use a lower ISO setting (in this case, it’s ISO 400). Same thing for capturing images of fast moving subjects – using the same ISO setting can increase the noise level of the image. If you’re capturing images outdoors – suggested ISO setting is between 800-1600.

What Digital Photography Really Delivers

What Digital Photography Really Delivers
By Jeremy Myers

I have spent much time working with and thinking about digital SLR technology of late. The digital revolution has been quite the learning process and throughout I’ve tried to determine whether digital capture meets my specific needs. What I am after is generally a print of 16×20″ or less, very sharply rendered in saturated color or shades of grey with extensive dynamic range and a small / tight grain pattern. I’ve been able to achieve this regularly with film equipment and I’d like to be able to do the same with digital.

Trying to determine whether digital makes sense for my purposes, I made a study of the available technical literature on the subject. Oh yeah, you’ll learn a lot about pixel packing, modulation transfer functions, tone stepping, digital noise and how these things affect image quality in the digital picture making process. There is also an endless trove of material on how small format digital stacks up against film equipment.

Technical reports are great, but for me it comes down to how prints look in their final form. In other words, I don’t care how things get done, I just want a beautiful print that expresses my vision, whatever that might be. I’ve learned quite a bit along the way and think I now have a handle on the main points. From a purely subjective viewpoint, here’s some (highly personal) observations of how things stack out in my world.

In Favor of Digital:

Small format camera that does not require consumables, is fast to use and produces prints that are reasonably sharp and coherent up to about 5×7″.

Within limits, what you see on the preview screen is what you’ve captured on the memory card. This one feature alone explains why virtually every wedding photographer on the planet uses digital. Where shooting speed and ‘getting the shot’ is the overriding concern, digital is king.

Availability of a wide range of lenses with nifty features such as wide zoom range, auto focus and image stabilization.

No hassles with airport x-ray screening devices. Travel anywhere in the world with no worries about fogged film.

Quick upload of images to web-based image sharing sites or printing services. Digital was made for the web! Even a middling good digital file looks fabulous on a monitor.

If you shoot RAW files, color correction is a snap-assuming you know what you’re doing. The ability to do post-capture image management with software is unrivaled by the darkroom and does not require years of effort to perfect.

Problems with Digital:

Equipment obsolescence is rampant and costs for good equipment are quite high. Due to rapid advances in signal capture and processing expect to replace your camera body every three years, it’s monetary and technical value will be near zero at that time.

The image sensor gets dirty quite often and requires careful cleaning with expensive supplies or a trip to the repair department for $65 a pop. The sensor is especially vulnerable to gunk when lubricants on the moving parts of the camera get splashed around. Lens changes invite dust into the camera body.

Short format lenses do not make it easy to systematically control depth of field effects. Everything is in focus, whether you want it that way or not.

Lenses must be of extremely high quality (read: expensive) to produce good results. Defects of consumer level optics are readily apparent when critically reviewing work prints.

Prints tend to look artificially sharp due to edge contrast effects giving a rather sterile look that I find unpleasant.

Dynamic range of sensor and processing electronics is very poor compared to film. Bright areas tend to ‘burn out’ rather easily requiring very careful exposure control. Technical fixes such as graduated neutral density filters or ‘highlight recovery’ manipulation in the image editing process is often required to manage normal contrast. Shooting in contrasty daylight is a real challenge.

Current lack of a world-wide standard file format suggests that today’s files may not be as archival as film based systems. File archiving and storage safety are also issues.

Summary: I believe that a high quality digital SLR fitted with a pro-grade lens is a close APPROXIMATION of a replacement for a 35mm film camera using slow color or black and white film. Further, it needs to be kept in mind that producing a really good quality digital image is not a simple matter of point and shoot. Due to the reduced dynamic range of the electronic sensor compared to film, lighting must be carefully controlled either by shooting multiple frames for high-dynamic-range processing, using a neutral density grad filter to control sky values, modeling available light with reflectors or fill flash and other techniques not likely to be used by your average shooter.

As to whether a digital SLR can compete with a 120 roll film camera or a 4×5 view camera, all you have to do is look at a set of equal sized test prints. 120 and 4×5 film produces prints that have a presence and depth that the digital SLR cameras don’t even begin to touch.
