Learn Digital Photography – 6 Steps to Great Photos

Learn Digital Photography – 6 Steps to Great Photos
By Wayne G Turner

If you do not want to improve your images then you aren’t serious about your photography. Even if it is just a hobby, work at learning to take better images. In twenty years time when you view your images they are no longer photos but memories. Learn to create memories that capture the moment.

After 40 years as a photographer I am still learning and trying new things to improve my photos, so why shouldn’t the rest of us? Photography is fun and even more so when the images turn out to be great. Here are some of my top tips for better photos.

1. Compose with care

Even if you aren’t planning to sell your images make them photos that are good enough to sell. Before you press the shutter button consider the basics. Your horizon must be straight. Exclude elements that are not necessary. Remove any clutter by getting closer or move your feet and change your angle. Think about where you will place your subject. Don’t just plonk it anywhere. Any lines, paths or curves should lead to your main subject or focal point.

2. Be selective

This leads on from point one. Think about what you want in the image. By moving around and shooting just one fishing boat that is clear and striking is better than shooting two that overlap each other. Keep distractions out of the image and watch the edges of your photo making sure that there are no intrusions. This can also be achieved by moving in closer which automatically excludes parts of a scene you don’t want in the image. By changing your aperture to a smaller f-stop e.g. f2.8 you create a shallow depth of field or focus. This blurs out your background and allows you to select a subject by just focusing on it.

3. Focus on your subject

Most camera focus systems have the focus point in the middle of the viewfinder. Use it accurately and make sure the subject is sharply focused. This is especially so when taking a portrait shot. Make very sure you focus on the eyes of your subject. They must always be sharp. There is nothing worse than a portrait that has eyes that are soft or out of focus. A slightly blurred nose goes unnoticed but the eyes are what attracts a viewers attention.

4. Keep it simple

The old adage says less is more. In photography this means that by having less clutter allows you to focus more on the subject of your choice. Make sure that your background is clear of other objects or subjects that would distract. Move in a little closer to exclude unwanted elements and allow your subject to dominate. Too many subjects confuse or distract the eye of a viewer and this busyness brings confusion and detracts from the main purpose if the image. Experimenting is great but too much overpowers the overall composition and makes it very ordinary. Keep it simple with equipment as well. Don’t overload yourself. Enjoy your photo experience.

5. Be quick

You can only be quick if you know your camera and equipment. Learn to make settings changes quick and accurately without even looking at the dials and buttons. This comes with practise, so practise often. Many a great photo opportunity can be over in seconds and trying to work out a setting before shooting loses the opportunity. So, have your camera always set on a general or automatic setting ready for the ‘Kodak moment’. You can always change to manual or creative settings when you need to. If the opportunity arises for a great shot, shoot first and then ask questions later.

6. Be aware of your environment

There are two factors you need to always be aware of. The first is the weather conditions. Overcast conditions are great when used correctly. The clouds act as a big filter and shadows aren’t a problem. But don’t focus on the sky under these conditions. If you can, add a polarising filter to your lens to bring out the colour of the sky. Second, be aware of the lighting conditions at all times. From which direction does your main light source come. Is the sun high or low? All of these affect your images to various degrees.

A good photographer will create a checklist of what he needs to be aware of. As you begin this needs to be written down, but, with experience this eventually becomes a mental checklist that you execute automatically. Photography should be fun and creating those great images just increases the level of excitement. As the old adage goes, ‘nothing breeds success like success’.

Online Photo Sharing – Easy, Safe and Secure

Online Photo Sharing – Easy, Safe and Secure
By MJ Johnston

Many people are interested in the idea of online photo sharing, but have concerns that are stopping them from jumping in to this fun pastime. Fortunately, there’s no need to worry – you can rest assured that the people who run online photo sharing sites have thought of all the same things. They want your online photo sharing experience to be intuitive and secure, so you have nothing to worry about.

If your main concern about online photo sharing is just that you’re confused about how to do it, then you can relax. First of all, you should consider the fact that everyone starts from the same place – no one immediately understands all of the ins and outs of online photo sharing. That said, there is tons of documentation out there on the assorted photo sharing sites and elsewhere that can help you learn all you need to know before you post a single picture.

For the most part, if you understand basic navigation of computers and the Internet, you should have absolutely no problems making a basic photo album and posting up some of your favorite pictures. Generally, the sites that offer photo sharing will give you step-by-step instructions and tips to make the experience easy and fun. Some other things that keep people from sharing their photos online is fear of putting their photos out in public. Either they want to keep their photos so that only their families and friends can view them, or they are intimidated by the idea of people on the Internet criticizing their public pictures. The possibility of people stealing your photos for their own use is always a scary thought.

The first thing to remember is that you control which photos you share on the Internet. If, for whatever reason, you are embarrassed about a photo in your collection, you’re not under any obligation to share it. Furthermore, most of the major photos sharing services offer various ways of limiting who sees your pictures. For instance, you might be able to password protect your photos – then you can just give the password to friends and family members who you want to see the photos.

Another concern that people have is receiving harsh criticism on their photography skills. The Internet is full of people who are just plain rude, and when they are protected by anonymity won’t hesitate to say mean things. Unfortunately, this is just a fact of life. However, keep in mind that you can always moderate comments on your own photos, and in some cases you can restrict the ability to comment on photos just to people that you know.

Having your photos stolen and used for purposes you didn’t authorize can also be a scary thought. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent this sort of thing happening. Some websites offer the ability to create overlays on the picture, so that if someone tries to download or link to the photo from elsewhere, it simply won’t work. This way, you can feel comfortable sharing your photos for everyone to see without worrying about some unscrupulous person stealing your work.

MJ Johnston writes for a variety of websites, including Onlinedigitalprinting, a photo site that offers advice on the quickest and easiest way to enjoy online digital photo printing, as well as how to get a free online photo album.

Sports Photography Tricks For More Fun and Action

Sports Photography Tricks For More Fun and Action
By Mike Greaves

Becoming a professional sport photographer can be as fun and exciting as the action being watched and captured on camera. Sports photography is not just a hobby or pastime anymore. Many people are taking up commercial athlete photography as a serious job or skill to be learnt. In fact, sports photography includes shooting all types of sports, be it amateur or professional.

In the world of commercial advertising athlete photography, success means getting the right shot at the right time. As a professional athlete photographer, you will come across various hindrances at times. Still, the high-end technical equipment available for commercial advertising sport photography is capable of overcoming most obstacles and providing memorable pictures of the every sport, be it basketball, triathlon, National Basketball League or even bodybuilding.

By getting the timing right in sports photography, it is possible to take some very unique pictures. All you need to do is learn the techniques and tricks of perfecting the photographs of professional athletes and other moving targets.

Nowadays, most commercial athlete photography is done through digital cameras. This allows you to take a lot of pictures without making a dent in your pockets. A good action shot is savored for a long time and form wonderful memories for sportsmen and fans alike. Some of the games will be talked about for years to come and the memories will be recaptured by simply looking at a well-shot photograph.

A significant part of commercial advertising sport photography is to learn how and where to position yourself for the best shots of professional athletes. Try to take pictures like you would if you were part of the game yourself. In the process of taking professional sports pictures, make sure that you enjoy the action and not just look for good positions to shoot it from. As you take interest in the game, you can even anticipate the player’s moves and be ready to capture their movements.

One point to remember is to get as close to the action as possible. When you are learning commercial athlete photography, keep in mind that action shot on the far side of the field is closer to the background as compared to that on the near side of the field. Be aware of the position of every professional athlete in the game. By turning the camera to get the long side of the film perpendicular to the ground, you will be able to shoot vertical pictures. If a basketball player is running from left to right, leave more space on the right side to show where he is going. This technique of sports photography brings clarity to the pictures and allows you to catch the action with your camera lens.

Commercial advertising sports photography or even simple sports photography gets you face to face with the professional sport you enjoy and the professional athletes you adore. It is also a great way to capture the memories of athletes and make special moments come alive on film. All in all, sports photography is a wonderful pastime and can be enjoyed even more as a full time profession.

Photo Gifts For the Entire Family

Photo Gifts For the Entire Family
By Connor R Sullivan

With school pictures, family events, and year-round digital camera opportunities it is hard to not have pictures available all the time. So, when you can’t think of the perfect gift for a friend or relative, why not give them a piece of you or your family. Grandparents love photo gifts because they say “I love you and I care about you” with a personal touch. Personalized photo gifts are also really great for a loved one who may be far away. Sending pictures from home is a great way to say “I’m thinking about you”. Photos are treasured keepsakes, so give them to everyone you know.

Senior year is a great example of when pictures are in demand in the family. Everyone has watched your son or daughter grow up and now they want the final picture that says it all. Senior pictures are usually a big deal and what better way to give them to friends and family then as a personalized photo gift. Family and friends are going to want pictures either way, so making them into cute graduation party favors or sending them out for the summer family reunion is a great way to make everyone happy.

Another great way to give photos as gifts is around Christmas time. Many families send out Merry Christmas notes, cards, and even magnetic calendars for the refrigerator to all of their friends and family. Christmas time is a time of giving and sharing, so sharing a beautiful picture of your family with others is not only a great way to say Merry Christmas but a great way to say “Our family is thinking of yours”. Other holidays like Easter or even the fourth of July are great for family photo gifts as well.

Pictures for presents are also a really great way to have an economically sound gift. Pictures are inexpensive to print and mail and you can have a larger list of recipients due to that factor. It is very simple to go to your neighborhood convenient store or grocery store and print off pictures. Now you can even bring in your digital camera card and sort through the pictures on your digital SI Card, which makes the entire process even easier. Even the machines that are used for this are touch screen now so the entire process just gets even better. Gift giving doesn’t have to be a difficult task and photo gifts make it really easy.

Photo gifts are personal and show a person or family that you care and that you are thinking of them. Photos are also extremely inexpensive and can be produced in bulk for big events like Senior pictures or even a wedding. The best gifts are kind of like the ones that you made for your mom in elementary school. They take some thought and a lot of love, but they are the most treasured thing to receive. Unlike material gifts that satisfy for the moment, pictures last a lifetime and tell many stories for years to come.

Connor Sullivan and his wife just recently bought photo gifts for their grandparents anniversary. They believe that personalized photo gifts are great for any occasion.
